Derrick Zhang
Head of Youth Development
Derrick Zhang is one of Singapore’s brightest young armwrestling prospects, balancing the dual identities of rising athlete and community leader. Still in his teens, he already boasts wins at the national level and finishes at the international level. He's received numerous gold medals across Senior and Junior classes at multiple Nationals, and he has since broken into the country’s top junior athlete across 3 weight classes -- from 65 to 77.
Internationally, Derrick led the Singapore team to the 2025 Bulgaria World Armwrestling Championships (WAC), marking Singapore's first return to the WAC in a decade. He placed top 12 in the world and bore Singapore's flag at the opening ceremony of the prestigious championships. Derrick has also placed top 3 in the fiercely competitive 2025 China Opens: facing the biggest class of the competition, he took home bronze in Youth 23 78kg -- challenging himself with opponents from a whole age class and 2 weight classes above himself. Backed by an athlete sponsorship from Eastside Arm Wrestling, Derrick has tested himself against seasoned pullers in high‑profile super‑matches and SEA‑regional qualifiers along with pins at SEA Cup, cementing a reputation for explosive starts and a top‑roll that can catch veterans off guard. Equally significant is Derrick’s commitment to growing the sport. As Head of Youth Development at Eastside Arm Wrestling and a core member within Singapore Armwrestling, he oversees JASG, has managers run weekly junior practices around the island, scouts new talent, and co‑organises events such as the Singapore Junior Championships and the annual Junior Gathering—the largest meet‑up Singapore’s scene has witnessed so far. Balancing undergraduate studies with training, Derrick frames his goals around both personal performance and community impact. He aims to be the first from Singapore to podium at Worlds, and perhaps most ambitiously, grow the local Junior roster to three hundred athletes by 2026. In a young, fast‑evolving sport, his blend of talent, organisation, and infectious enthusiasm makes him a keystone figure in Singapore’s arm‑wrestling future.
